Nachdem Netbooks (kleine mobile Laptops) der große Renner 2008 waren, sollen die Nettops (kleine günstige Mini-PCs) den gleichen Erfolg im Desktop-Segment erzielen. Asus hat mit der Eee Box einen ersten Nettop vorgestellt und Händler wie MiniPirat verwenden für die eigenen Nettops günstige Mini-ITX Mainboards von Intel. Die Firma MSI, die viel Erfahrung im Barebone Segment hat und ebenfalls Netbooks fabriziert, bietet unter der Marke Wind PC die eigenen Nettops an, wahlweise mit Intel Atom 230 oder der Dual-Core Variante Atom 330 an. Im Vergleich zu "traditionellen" PCs mit 250 Watt Stromverbrauch, ist der MSI Wind PC äußerst energiesparend und verbraucht zwischen 30 und 50 Watt. Für Internet- oder Office Anwendungen ist ein Nettop somit ideal, zumal er geringe Betriebskosten produziert. Ab 130 EUR ist der Barebone, bestehend aus Mainboard, CPU und DVD Laufwerk erhältlich, die Komplettsysteme mit zusätzlicher Festplatte, Speicher und einem Windows XP, Windows Vista oder SUSE Linux Betriebssystem starten ab ca. 250 EUR Endkundenpreis.
